SRRC Race Reports

Riley's Rumble Half Marathon, Poolesville MD—July 24, 2005
by Catalina Gomolka
On July 24, I ran the Riley's Rumble Half Marathon in Poolesville, MD.
$10 for a local race that is supported with Gatorade and water every 2 miles
and you get a free gel at mile 10. Good deal!
After that the race though, Poolesville has one meaning to me - HILLS.
Luckily, that weekend we had a "cold front" come through, so the temperature
wasn't in the 90s, but it was still pretty hot. The beginning of the race
was pretty shady and that helped a lot. At about mile ½, we hit our first
hill--the first of many. It made it a very challenging course, but I just
thought of it as good hill training. We don't have many hills in South
Riding, so it's good to do something like that once in a while.
I felt pretty good until about mile 10, at that point it started getting
pretty hot and my energy levels began to deteriorate. Somehow I got my
second wind and was able to finish strong. The last mile, I had to keep on
hitting my quads to make sure they wouldn't cramp up. As much as I don't
like going up a hill, going down really kills my quads! The next day I
couldn't sit down or go down the stairs. My time was 2 hours 9 min and 32
seconds. That's a PR for me for a half-marathon, even with the hills and the
heat--I was pretty happy! I'm planning on doing it again next year.
