SRRC Technical Shirts

You might have noticed that SRRC members have been doing pretty well on the racing circuit. It's time to make sure everyone knows who we are! Now you can have your very own SRRC shirt to wear with pride at your next race, fun run, barbeque, fishing trip . . . .

We have several different offerings to accommodate all running and runner styles. In the Brooks performance family, we're offering short-sleeve and long-sleeve technical shirts in white, black, navy, and red. Get one in every color! We also have a singlet (i.e., racing shirt, no sleeves) in the same colors, as well as orange and yellow to dazzle your competition.

Note that singlets for men and women are different, so order accordingly. Finally, we have a new addition to our logo gear - an Anvil blend t-shirt. This shirt feels like cotton but is actually 80% polyester, 20% cotton, hence the "blend" name. Some people prefer not to run in this type of shirt, but it does serve as great casual-wear for, say, happy hour at Firkin and Hound or a stroll around South Riding.

All shirts will have the SRRC logo on the front left side and www.srrunners.org on the back. Sample shirts will be available at most weekend runs. Order soon - these offerings are good for a limited time only! (i.e., we're placing the order May 31st!)

Spring Running Tips

Even though we haven't seen many temperate days yet, spring has sprung, offering a welcome relief from those cold dark mornings when getting up to run was just too hard. Some runners are active outside year-round. Others resort to the treadmill during the winter months. Still others take a few months off during the winter and seem to emerge again with the cherry blossoms. Every season presents unique opportunities and challenges, and spring is no different. As always, be very watchful around cars and always expect the unexpected! While some tips like this are true year-round, others are particular to the spring. Read more . . .

Take Steps DC/VA Walk

Part of the enjoyment of running, walking, and being active is taking our fitness and good fortune and using it to have fun and help worthy causes. You can often spot South Riding runners at events all over the region. We're probably active enough to dedicate a page on the web site just to pending runs and walks for charity. In the meantime, you can join Stephanie Tortorella and her daughter in the DC/VA Take Steps walk in at the Tidal Basin on Saturday, June 21st. For years Stephanie has been very active in our local fitness community, where many of us have gotten to know her. She's also active in the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, a national non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to helping find a cure for for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Click on their picture if you'd If you'd like to sponsor them. Every bit helps.

Take Steps for Crohn’s and Colitis is the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. The DC/VA walk features live music, food and drinks, activities for children and teens, and this year a “dog walk.” You can also register for the event yourself by clicking on the Take Steps logo. The event raises money for research, educational services to the up to one million adults and children who suffer from these diseases, and to fund a children’s camp.

SRRC Membership

Have you noticed how crowded the health clubs are right after the new year? It's those "New Year's resolutions". Everyone has one and a lot of people believe that if they pay $50-$100 a month they're going to be motivated to work out.

For many of us the motivation that comes from camaraderie and knowing that someone is counting on you is all it takes. SRRC offers both camaraderie and positive peer pressure with a generous sprinkling of great advice, encouragement, and support. Add supported runs and web resources to that, and your annual dues are a bargain. If you're not yet a member, just download and complete the appropriate membership form. Dues are as follows:

December "early bird" sign up:
— 1 year: $22 individual, $33 family
— 2 years: $40 individual, $60 family

After January 1st:
— 1 year: $25 individual, $35 family
— 2 years: $45 individual, $65 family

If you sign up early, you can save a few dollars! Once your membership form and payment are received, we'll promptly mail you your membership package. Don't forget to note on your application that you're an early bird. If you are already a member, don't procrastinate--confirm your support for running in our community by sending in your check. January 31 is the official deadline, which simplifies record keeping, but dues and applications are welcome year round.

If you are a new member and are signing up after May 1st, download and fill out this form to take advantage of pro-rated membership dues.

Run When You Travel
Gray Line

Getting there may not be as much fun as it used to be, but don't let that stop you from packing your running shoes!Lots of us travel for work or to visit family and friends in other cities over holidays and long weekends. Don't forget your running shoes! As a member of SRRC you're also associated with the Road Runners Club of America, an organization made up of about 175,000 members in over 700 running clubs around the country. Practically every major or medium-sized city in the country has a running club affiliated with RRCA. (Many smaller towns may have clubs that you can also find through a little runner networking.) Notice the RRCA news at the bottom of the page?

Why should you care? If your job or vacation is taking you someplace unfamiliar, don't leave your shoes behind! Go to the RRCA web site and check out clubs in the area where you'll be traveling. You can get in touch, plan ahead, and meet other runners who will be delighted to share their local running routes. There's no better and safer way to get a tour of a city than with the local running club. It can also make business travel personally productive, too.
